Aspiring porn star Capri Anderson, nee Christina Walsh, is seen mugging for the camera as Sheen sits slumped behind a bottle of wine, a glass of wine and a martini with olives. One look at the photos and it's clear why Richards chose to leave the dinner at swanky New York restaurant Daniel before her starter even arrived.

More alarming than what's revealed in the photos is Radar's report that Sheen was found in the restaurant's toilet during dinner, naked and snorting cocaine. Radar alleges that Sheen and his date went to the toilet together during their meal, where he wanted to have sex. After he took his trousers off, Capri asked for $12,000. When he didn't pay, she returned to the dinner table.

His assistant later found Sheen naked with cocaine on his face, still in the toilet. He helped the star get dressed and back to his Plaza hotel room, where Sheen then had his highly-publicized meltdown.

As for the wine Sheen's drinking in the photos, it didn't come cheap. TMZ reports Sheen was swilling multiple bottles of Grand Vin de Chateau Latour 1959, which set the actor back $5,900 each.

Perhaps it was having to sit through a Broadway performance of Mary Poppins with his children the previous evening that sent him over the edge. Enduring the unashamedly saccharine musical for nearly three hours must have been akin to torture for the Hollywood hell-raiser.

As it was, the following night Sheen found himself naked and comatose in his bedroom at New York’s Plaza Hotel in the company of 22-year-old ‘actress’ Christina Walsh, while his ex-wife Denise Richards and two young daughters slept down the corridor.

Just to add to his discomfort, Miss Walsh (who sometimes calls herself Capri Anderson) ended up locking herself in the bathroom to escape the actor who, she says, was high on drink and cocaine, and has had to deny claims she is a prostitute.

It is worth pointing out, however, that her acting career, such as it is, has been limited to the strictly ‘adult’ variety. Working under the stage name of Capri Nubiles, she has appeared in such cinematic opuses as Big Bust Cougars and Damn, She’s A Lesbian.

Suffice to say, the pneumatic Miss Walsh will not, one suspects, be in line to take over the role made famous by Julie Andrews any time soon. What we know for sure is that the denouement of what had clearly been a very long evening came at 2am when other hotel guests heard what they described as ‘primal screaming’ and swearing coming from Sheen’s room.

A few minutes later a naked Miss Walsh told police she had been in fear of her life at the hands of the 45-year-old actor. Meanwhile, the notoriously high-living Sheen was being carted off to hospital in an ambulance for ‘psychological evaluation’.

None of which would be out of place in a script for Two And A Half Men, the bawdy comedy in which he stars as Charlie Harper, a rich but feckless bad boy with a taste for booze and hookers.

Let’s face it, the part really can’t be too much of a stretch for Sheen who, despite presumably being able to play the role in his sleep, still gets paid a reputed £1.2 million an episode by U.S. network CBS.

For how much longer, however, remains open to speculation following the star’s arrest this week in what remained of room 1832 of the exclusive hotel.

Sources in Hollywood tell me that senior executives at CBS have already met with Warner Bros Television, the makers of the hit comedy, for crisis talks. Both sides agree, it seems, that Sheen is in breach of a beefed up ‘morality clause’ inserted into the deal when he re-signed for two more series in May.

The question is: in spite of his public shame, will station bosses really be willing to axe the unpredictable Sheen from the number-one rated show on American television?

That might depend on court officials in Aspen, Colorado, where the actor still has seven days left to serve on probation for drunkenly attacking his soon-to-be third ex-wife, actress Brooke Mueller, at their house on Christmas Day last year.

Last night, judicial sources there were maintaining that despite the fact Sheen was not charged over the incident in New York, they might still consider his behaviour a breach of the suspended 30-day sentence he received in August and haul him back to jail.

No wonder Sheen’s anxious handlers have launched a swift rearguard action. His beleaguered spokesman Stan Rosenfield was still insisting to me this week that his client’s hotel rampage, which caused £5,000 damage, was the result of an ‘allergic reaction to medication’.

Meanwhile, his worried manager Mark Burg, who is also an executive producer of Two And A Half Men, is said to be attempting to placate the television network by agreeing that Sheen — who has twice been in rehab this year alone — will now check into a treatment centre again in a public show of contrition.

It may already be a case of too little too late. Sheen’s out-of control behaviour has already cost him a lucrative contract with U.S. underwear firm Hanes, who have dumped him from a high-profile ad campaign.

‘As far as keeping his job is concerned, Charlie is teetering on the tightrope,’ Mike Paul, a New York based expert in media crisis management, told me.

‘The question about whether CBS fire him will come once they have fully been able to gauge the reaction to his latest scandal. I do know that the network is already talking to advertisers and sponsors concerned about how the public reacts to what he’s done.

‘CBS is a very traditional broadcaster and this has gone down very badly with them. What Charlie has to do now to try to salvage his career, not to mention his life, is quit the show for a year to get help for his problems.

‘A couple of weeks in rehab AGAIN is not going to convince anyone that he really wants to sort himself out.’ Certainly, the star of movies such as Platoon and Wall Street does not appear to be in any mood to help himself.

Senior figures in Hollywood, that I have been talking to since his wife-beating arrest last year, have been warning for months that Sheen is in meltdown. But they say that such is his success in the ratings that a blind eye has been turned to his debauchery and rumours that his drug taking has reached epic proportions over recent months.

No one could argue that the warning signs have not been there. As far back as February this year, Sheen’s brand new Mercedes was found wrecked 400ft down a deep ravine off Mulholland Drive, two miles from his LA home at 4am.

The actor claimed to police that the car had been stolen from his garage when he left the keys in the ignition after returning home late. The incident came little more than a month after Brooke Mueller, by whom he has 19-month old twin sons Max and Bob, claimed he threatened to kill her and brandished a knife during a festive row when she asked for a divorce.

The couple, who married in 2008, publicly tried to repair the relationship, but Sheen was soon seen leaving the apartment of lingerie model Angelina Tracy wearing a bizarre disguise of fake moustache and a hoodie.

But it is said that as part of a £1.5 million divorce deal, Miss Mueller, 33, agreed to stand by him until his trial at which he faced the prospect of 12-months in jail for attacking her.

She attempted to get police to drop the charges as it emerged in legal papers that Sheen had agreed to pay her £34,000-a-month in child support as long she kept quiet about his use of prostitutes and taste for narcotics.

In the event, Sheen pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of third-degree assault at his trial two months ago and was ordered to spend a month in rehab and 30 days on probation.

Born into a Hollywood acting dynasty, his father Martin Sheen is the star of Apocalypse Now and The West Wing, and his brothers Joe and Emilio Estevez are fellow actors (like his father, Charlie, born Carlos Irwin Estevez, dropped his Hispanic surname).

When Charlie was just 19, his girlfriend Paula Profit gave birth to a daughter Cassandra Jade, now 26. And his love life continued to be a messy affair. During a brief engagement to actress Kelly Preston, who was later to marry John Travolta, she needed stitches in her arm after, according to him, his gun went off by accident.

For two years, he dated American porn star Ginger Lynn and in 1995 he married model Donna Peele. At the same time, he was famously called to give evidence in the trial of notorious Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss.

As his life spiralled out of control, he took to drinking two bottles of vodka a day and snorting huge amounts of cocaine.

He married former Bond girl Denise Richards in 2002 and the couple had daughters Sam, six, and five-year-old Lola. But the marriage lasted only four years amid numerous restraining orders and her claims that he was a violent, drunken bully.

Given their tumultuous history, it is surprising that Sheen and 39-year-old Miss Richards are now on speaking terms. She even accompanied the actor and their daughters on the trip to Manhattan during which Sheen’s latest fall from grace occurred.

Of course sometimes you can save money by traveling differently, and that's okay too. Why pay an extra $40 for a hotel if you like the idea of staying in a hostel with visitors from around the world? Why rent a car in countries where good bus and train systems make for cheaper and more interesting trips?

Essentially you can travel cheap in two ways. First, you can find cheaper ways to get the same thing. The other, perhaps more powerful way, is to alter your expectations and plans to create a more interesting trip that is also inexpensive. The tips that follow will help you do both.

1. See if you can book two flights cheaper than one.

My wife and I are thinking about going to Ecuador this year (2007). Checking for our approximate dates, I found that it would cost $950 each round trip from Colorado Springs, or $1,900 total. Then I checked from Colorado Springs to Miami. It would be $215 round trip. From Miami to Guayaquil, Ecuador costs $350 round trip. That makes it just $565 to Ecuador, or $1,130 total - a savings of $770.

Of course, if you are going to do this, you have to find flights that have enough time in-between them. You probably won't get e refund if you miss the second flight because of a delay on the first. In our case, we have friends near Miami, so we'll just arrange the flights to be a day or two apart, and go visiting. Even after the cost of renting a car for a couple days we'll still be hundreds of dollars ahead.

2. Live in a new place for a while.

One way to make a vacation less rushed, cheaper, and in many ways more interesting, is to stop going from hotel to hotel. Why not stay in a place, and even rent a condo or apartment? We did this a few years back in Tucson, Arizona. It was nice to escape winter for a couple months, and it was fun to explore and get to know a new city. Often you can save hundreds of dollars this way, versus paying by the night for hotel rooms.

3. Be an opportunistic traveler.

This is the most valuable of these cheap travel tips. There are so many things to do out there and so many places to see, so why get stuck on just the ones you have already thought of? With a little luck, you might find a more interesting place to go for half the price. With little shopping, you might find a bed and breakfast in whatever country you visit, and pay less for a more interesting experience.

First look for all the possible alternatives that are less expensive. This isn't about doing something you don't want to do. But among those cheaper choices there might be a perfect trip for you. Why not find out? To start with, do any of your friends live in interesting places? Visiting friends is a great way to save on travel costs and have a load of fun (with the right friends).

Here's a good example of being an opportunist. We were in the mountain resort town of Banos, Ecuador, and asked about the cost of taxi ride to some waterfall. It was $15. It was apparently a popular attraction with tourists. We kept that in mind as we wandered around. Then we saw a chiva (an open-sided bus with seating on the roof) go by playing music. We asked about that.

The chiva took us on a tour of the city (I rode on the roof), then up into the mountains for a view of the city from above. Then we watched the volcano Tungurahua erupt and spit out a bit of lava. They served us hot rum drinks (included in the price), and there were fire-juggling entertainers. Passengers had to push the chiva to get it started for the trip back to town. The cost of all this? $3 each. Cheap travel does not mean uninteresting travel.
